Rosie Can't Be Oprah, So She Joins O's New Network, along with Tyra Banks, Julia Roberts, Gayle King and more.

Rosie has ankled the plan to be the next Oprah and, instead, has just inked a deal with OWN—Oprah's new cable network—to host a daily talk show. One of Rosie's producers said to the New York Times that OWN offered "the best business proposition" out there for Rosie. As audiences for network daytime talk shows have declined since their heyday in the mid-'90s, perhaps Rosie thinks the best way to reach the niche that is still deeply invested in the confessional genre is through a cable network like Oprah's, one that still bears her hugely influential stamp. Even more to the point, maybe Rosie just realizes that there will never be another Oprah, so it's better to join her than to try to replace her.

Oprah Winfrey's OWN A-List Hosts

While OWN offers a platform for anything-but-ubiquitious documentaries, it also dabbles in a cable TV staple: reality TV. Country crooner Shania Twain stars in "Why Not? With Shania Twain," which will follows her trying to revive her personal and professional life after splitting from her husband, music producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange.



Winfrey's BFF, Gayle King, will get top billing on OWN. She'll host "Gayle King Live!," a TV version of her XM Satellite Radio show.


Two OWN shows offer a smorgasbord of stars: "Oprah Presents: Master Class" and "Visionaries: Inside the Creative Mind." The first features celebrities dispensing life lessons. Jay-Z, Bono, Toni Morrison, Simon Cowell, Lorne Michaels and Condoleezza Rice are rumored to have signed on. "Visionaries" looks at the minds of modern day artists, including James Cameron, Lady Gaga, and Annie Leibovitz.

Of course, the channel couldn't be complete if Winfrey herself weren't on screen. "Behind the Scenes: The Oprah Show Final Season," is set to begin in January, as the network launches. She'll also host the aptly titled "Oprah's Next Chapter," a one-hour series in which she'll do on-location interviews. New channel, new format, same Oprah.

In response to a lawsuit filed by two gay couples who said the voter-approved ban violated their civil rights, Judge Vaughan Walker rejected every argument posed by sponsors of the ban. In his 136-page opinion, Walker wrote, "Proposition 8 perpetuates the stereotype that gays and lesbians are incapable of forming long-term loving relationships and that gays and lesbians are not good parents."



"This issue is not going to go away," Perkins said on "Face the Nation." "I think what you have is one judge who thinks he knows - and a district level judge and an openly-homosexual judge at that - who says he knows better than not only 7 million voters in the state of California, but voters in 30 states across the nation that have passed marriage amendments. This is far from over."


Boies disputed Perkins on the evidence: "It's easy to sit around and debate and throw around opinions that appeal to people's fear and prejudice, [and] cite studies that either don't exist or don't say what you say they do.

"In a court of law you've got to come in and you've got to support those opinions, you've got to stand up under oath and cross-examination," Boies said. "And what we saw at trial is that it's very easy for the people who want to deprive gay and lesbian citizens of the right to vote [sic] to make all sorts of statements and campaign literature, or in debates where they can't be cross-examined.

The Moscow skyline of the Kremlin and St. Basil's Cathedral vanished Friday as a blanket of thick, noxious smoke shrouded the metropolis, leaving many of the city's 10 million residents with sore throats and burning eyes.



On Friday, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev visited a Moscow ambulance station, accompanied by top health officials. He was told that the number of emergency calls has increased by about 10 percent lately, related to the heat and smog.



The acrid smoke, from thousands of square miles of wildfires, drove carbon monoxide levels in Moscow five times higher than what is considered safe, the Russian Health Ministry said.



Residents were encouraged to stay indoors. Many who did not could be seen wearing masks as they walked outdoors.



In interviews with the state-run RIA Novosti news agency, health officials likened the pollution levels to smoking several packs of cigarettes a day.
